N.M. Attorney General's Sex Offender Legislative Package Unveiled

Includes GPS tracking of paroled sex offenders.

New Mexico Attorney General Gary King presented a multi-pronged attack on sex offenders in New Mexico today. The Sex Offender package will be presented in the next legislative session, which begins next Tuesday. This is the first of several proposals that will be delivered to the Legislature in coming weeks by the Attorney General.

"In campaigning to become your new Attorney General, one of my main objectives was to protect New Mexico families," says King. "This Sex Offender package addresses a wide range of protections for the youngest members of those families. My staff and I are working hard with members of the Legislature to add new laws and strengthen existing laws that will help ensure our children's safety for generations to come."

Highlights of the Sex Offender package include broader definitions and increased penalties for Internet sex crimes against children, early intervention treatment for juveniles, GPS tracking of paroled sex offenders, and life sentences for two time offenders involving criminal sexual contact of a minor.

Legislators from the House of Representatives and Senate attended today's news conference to announce the AG's proposals. Others who could not attend also indicated interest in supporting the Attorney General's Sex Offender legislative package.
