Logan Airport Dashboard Tracks Security Checkpoint Waits

(TNS) — Travelers passing through Logan International Airport in Boston can now view a live online report of security checkpoint wait times, allowing them to better plan their arrival at the airport ahead of a flight.

The Massachusetts Port Authority, or Massport, which owns the airport, announced the new dashboard Monday, saying it “reflects current conditions at each checkpoint” at Logan.

Around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, the tracker showed wait times at Terminal A’s regular security checkpoints fluctuating between five and seven minutes. TSA PreCheck wait times in the terminal were as low as a minute, according to the dashboard, which can be found on Massport’s website and on the FlyLogan mobile app.

Over in Terminal E, regular security wait times were five-to-seven minutes, the dashboard showed, while TSA PreCheck waits were three-to-four minutes.

“Providing our passengers with a smooth and predictable travel experience is a top priority for Massport,” Massport CEO Rich Davey said in a statement Monday. “We are proud to have some of the lowest wait times in the country. Through making wait times live and easily accessible, we’re providing passengers with another tool in order to plan their travels and navigate the airport with ease.”

Massport announced the new technology on Monday. In March, it had said the release was targeted for mid-April.

In the past, some Boston travelers have relied on estimated wait times published by the TSA on the “MyTSA” mobile app.

In March, when security checkpoint lines at some airports stretched for hours amid a partial government shutdown, some travelers told MassLive they used the app to stay informed about wait times at Logan Airport. The airport faced far fewer TSA staffing shortages and related backups at security screening than other airports around the country.

The new Massport dashboard was developed with an outside vendor, the agency said.

It uses cameras to monitor line length and speed, Massport told the Boston Globe in March. The cameras do not record details about the people in line, instead registering them only as “nondescript forms,” the paper reported.

Similar technology was already being used at some other airports, including Denver International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
