Residents can now store digital driver’s licenses and state ID cards on their Apple devices. The app can be used at most Transportation Security Administration checkpoints nationwide.

(TNS) — A smartphone app that allows West Virginia residents to store driver's licenses and official state identification documents on their smartphones is now available for public use, Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced on Thursday.

The free app allows users to add drivers licenses or state ID cards to their wallets on mobile phones to verify their identities at airport security checkpoints or with law enforcement officials.

Morrisey said the app can be scanned into readers at most Transportation Security Administration checkpoints at commercial airports across the country, including those serving Charleston and Huntington, to "seamlessly and securely present your identification."

Morrisey said the state is working with vendors to allow the new app to be used at more businesses across the state.

Users scan existing driver's licenses or state ID cards, along with digital photographs of themselves, into the Apple Wallet app to provide identification documentation, then present their new mobile ID by holding their device near the identity reader and reviewing and confirming the requested information.

For more information on how to download and use the app, visit learn.wallet.apple/id or bit.ly/WV_mID.

To add your ID to your iPhone and any paired Apple Watch, open Apple Wallet and tap the plus sign (+) at the top-right corner of the screen. Select Driver's License or State ID, then follow the onscreen prompts to start the setup process.

Plans to implement the new app were initially announced late last year by former Gov. Jim Justice. At that time, state officials in a news release said the app was expected to be available for use by the end of December 2024.
