Such systems face the same regulatory scrutiny as any other municipal water system, but with one caveat: many water-governing entities don’t have water quality standards for on-site treatment systems. So the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, along with similar bodies from across the country, is working to put together a package of standards that make it easier for vendors to design systems that regulators are happy with.
That, in turn, makes it easier for developers to work those systems into plans, and it makes it easier for regulators to handle the projects because they come in built to specification.
Meanwhile, the customers are racking up water bill savings and the region they sit in is using less water overall.
