Job: State Emergency Operations Officer

This is a great job to enter the field of emergency management. It is one that military transitioning out of the service would compete well for.

Washington State Emergency Management has this State Emergency Operations Officer position just advertised. These staff work in a 24/7 warning center. I'd say you need some technological aptitude. They have a bunch of systems and programs already, and that will likely grow even more in the coming years.

Yes, there is the shift work aspect, but you know in advance what your schedule is.

Just a tidbit of information. Glen Woodbury started as the first paid duty officer for Washington State Emergency Management Division back in the early 1990s. He ended up being the director for the division and now has a senior leadership position at the Naval Post Graduate School. He certainly had the skills, aptitude, personality and drive to move up. The other factor that is always critical is timing. He hit it "almost" just right. But, persistence led to his success.

Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
