Appointment of Greg Garcia to Cyber Security Position at DHS Praised

September 21, 2006 By

House Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) praised the appointment of Greg Garcia to be the Assistant Secretary for Cyber Security and Telecommunications at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Garcia, a former Science Committee staffer, handled cyber security and information technology issues as a professional staff member on the Research Subcommittee. He left the Committee in 2003 to become Vice President of Information Security at the Information Technology Association of America.

"I am pleased that DHS has finally filled this vital position, which we pushed to have established and which has been vacant since its creation in 2005," Boehlert said. "And I'm equally pleased that the Administration has turned to Greg Garcia, a real expert in the information and computer security field, to oversee its cyber security and telecommunications activities. As a professional staff member on our Research Subcommittee, Greg played an integral role in crafting the Cyber Security Research and Development Act, which was signed into law in 2002. Even after leaving the Science Committee, Greg continued to play an active role in shaping cyber security policy as a senior official at the Information Technology Association of America. I have no doubt that Greg's many years of experience in cyber security will be a great asset to DHS."
