CivStart, a startup accelerator and innovation-focused nonprofit in the gov tech space, is looking for companies to respond to five cities’ challenges.

The organization, which launched in 2019, is collecting submissions for the challenges through April 28 — an extension from the original deadline. The challenges are:

  • Raleigh, N.C.: Help people build accessory dwelling units, especially in the area of securing loans and grants. One submission will be awarded $5,000 and a pilot project.
  • Grand Rapids, Mich.: Improve the process of registering as a women- or minority-owned business, ease the tracking and reporting of those registrants and ensure that they are notified of contracting opportunities.
  • Las Vegas: Assist homeless people in finding and applying for housing by improving communications between applicants, caseworkers and landlords.
  • Peoria, Ill.: Empower downtown revival by mapping existing real estate, potential opportunities, surveying stakeholders on improvements and more.
  • Irmo, S.C.: Provide detailed information about properties and their owners for both internal and external users. The city has a budget of up to $20,000 for a pilot project.

Aside from these types of government challenges, CivStart also runs an accelerator to help gov tech companies grow and an innovation hub that hosts events, conducts research and produces thought leadership.
