Amazon Launches $250,000 Cloud Competition for Local Government

Amazon Web Services wants to see governments innovating in the cloud, and this summer they're recognizing the best.

Cloud provider Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on June 25 its second City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge. The competition, which will accept entries until Aug. 21, seeks to recognize eight leading government project ideas that could be made possible by the use of the AWS cloud.

Winners will be awarded a total of $250,000 in three categories, which include “best practices,” “partners in innovation” and “dream big.” Competitors will be judged based on the impact of the idea, likelihood of long-term success, use of AWS and the potential for project expansion in other local governments.

“All around the world, local and regional governments are using the AWS Cloud to innovate and meet their mission,” said Teresa Carlson, vice president of worldwide public sector at AWS. “The winners of last year’s City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge included local governments forecasting crime using machine learning, enhancing air traveler experience with Internet of Things data, and making data more accessible to developers and researchers – all made possible by the AWS Cloud. We’re looking forward to this year’s City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge and seeing how local governments are using the cloud in transformative ways.”

More information about entry, including rules, judge, and winners from the 2014 competition can be found on the City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge website.
