Illinois Department of Transportation Building GIS Database for State's Roads

Database with maps updated quarterly expected to form the foundation of a statewide enterprise system

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has tapped NAVTEQ, GIS Solutions and ESRI to collaborate in the development and implementation of comprehensive statewide digital road network database. The road network database will serve as a key component to integrating information within one database, serving as a foundation for a statewide enterprise system. IDOT's plans for a single unified road database will be suitable for use by all functional areas of IDOT as well as other governmental agencies in Illinois.

Under this agreement NAVTEQ will deliver quarterly updates of the map database to GIS Solutions, who are then responsible for integration and deployment within the IDOT environment.

"NAVTEQ's field-based data collection processes together with their adherence to rigorous quality metrics persuaded us that NAVTEQ was the right choice for this opportunity. We are excited about collaborating with NAVTEQ on this important project," commented Tim Johnson, President, GIS Solutions. "A comprehensive GIS roadway base will be a significant milestone in terms of GIS deployment and use in Illinois. The robustness of the data will allow for the development of multiple applications, all based on a common set of features, allowing for a common display and analysis base for all of the state's governmental agencies.

"Successful development and deployment of a digital road network for IDOT will provide unlimited opportunities to deliver core business services to the public using GIS applications. IDOT is pioneering a course that promises to lead us into a fully integrated GIS enterprise that encompasses potentially every government agency in Illinois," Mark Kinkade, Chief Information Officer of IDOT, said.
