Obtained by ABC News,the alert was issued a day before a gunman opened fire in Austin, Texas, killing three and injuring 13. The shooting is being investigated for a possible terror motive.
The memo said that although “a large-scale physical attack is unlikely, Iran and its proxies probably pose a persistent threat of targeted attacks in the Homeland, and will almost certainly escalate retaliatory actions—or calls to action.
“In the short-term, we are most concerned that Iran-aligned hacktivists will conduct low-level cyber attacks against US networks, such as website defacements and distributed denial-of-service attacks,” officials said.
Lone wolf attackers have not “historically been motivated” by issues relate to Iran, the memo noted, but “increased US or Israeli actions could prompt some US-based violent extremists or hate crime perpetrators to attack targets perceived to be Jewish, pro-Israel, or linked to the US government or military.”
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said this week that the country is under a heightened threat environment.
“Every day there’s a real danger and risk of it, but it is elevated at this time with the conflicts that we see going on overseas,” Noem said.
Military bases around the countryhave stepped up security at gates. Military installations under threat level BRAVO, indicating an increased or more predictable threat of terror activity.
