The American University in Cairo, founded in 1919, serves as a vital bridge between the cultures of East and West, linking Egypt and the region to the world through scholarly research, study-abroad programs and open interaction with academic institutions.
The new "City of Learning" campus is being designed to include the latest communications services to create a technologically advanced and environmentally sensitive complex for 5,500 full-time students and 1,500 faculty and staff, with room for further expansion.
The new integrated voice and data network from Nortel will help increase communications efficiencies of AUC staff and students while also providing high levels of mobility to users. Secure access both within the campus and remotely will be ensured by Nortel Security solutions.
"Nortel's advanced communication solutions portfolio will enhance our position and reputation as an educational center of excellence in Egypt. Nortel has perfectly understood our needs and designed a secure, cost-effective infrastructure that ensures all of our voice, data, video and wireless communications are leading-edge with the embedded flexibility to easily evolve to meet changing demand," said David D. Arnold, president, AUC.
"AUC is a great example of how Nortel helps transform the complex network requirements of its customers into a simple communications experience that is seamless to the user, regardless of device. Nortel worked very closely with AUC to develop and deliver products to meet their priorities," said Ramin Attari, Nortel middle east leader. "Nortel's flexible, secure and always on solutions enable universities and colleges to extend the boundaries of education far beyond the classroom to improve the efficiency of campus resources."
Mobile communications for campus staff and students will be provided through Nortel Wireless Area Network (WLAN) coverage which ensures secure high-speed wireless access within the campus from more than 370 access points.
