Secure cross-functional and cross-border voice and data communication systems will help ensure faster and easier collaboration amongst Lithuania's public safety organizations across the country. An IP-based TETRA solution, the network will support data transmission, enabling public safety organizations to send data -- such as fingerprints, passport information, license plates and pictures -- to and from handheld TETRA devices and central computer systems.
Based on TETRA, the open standard for digital private mobile radio (PMR), the network also ensures Lithuania fulfils Schengen cross-border communication requirements.
Motorola, working together with JSC INTA, Motorola's local distributor, is responsible for the design and implementation of the TETRA network. Roll-out of the new network is expected to begin in Q2 2007, with completion due by Q4 2007. Motorola plans to hand the network over to Lithuania's Ministry of Interior at the end of 2007. The contract also includes 6,200 TETRA radio devices, with built-in global position system (GPS) to pinpoint the users' location.

Lithuania's shared digital radio communication network will be based on Motorola Dimetra IP, a highly scalable TETRA Over IP switch solution that offers a more resilient, robust and reliable network for seamless communication amongst users -- across borders, networks and devices. It supports voice, telephony, messaging and data services that enable mobile applications such as database enquiries and image transmission, on a single network virtually anytime, anywhere, quickly and securely.
The contract builds on Motorola's public safety heritage and its leading position within the TETRA market. Motorola is committed to innovation on the TETRA platform, including the creation of applications and the development of TETRA II technology.
TETRA is the open standard for PMR as defined by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). Motorola has been instrumental, together with other TETRA industry players, in supporting the standard since its inception in the late 1980s. TETRA has evolved to become a mission- critical tool in public safety and has been rolled out across 77 countries worldwide. Motorola continues to work with industry partners, the TETRA Association and ETSI to drive the standard forward.
