The problem surfaced after vehicle owners who’d previously declared their cars and trucks questioned the county after receiving a second notification.
Some residents elaborated on social media. “Just figured it got ‘lost’ in the mail,” one resident wrote on Facebook. “Did it online the second time around.”
Deputy Assessor Crystal Adkisson said the “technical issue” came to the attention of county officials after the second notice had been mailed.
“We worked quickly to find the source and made the necessary changes to ensure this won’t happen again in the future,” Adkisson said.
County Assessor Jake Zimmerman estimated the cost of printing and mailing duplicate notices at $15,000.
Adkisson urged residents with continuing questions about the duplicate forms to contact the assessor’s office by phone at 314-615-5500 or email, assessor@stlouisco.com.
The personal property declaration deadline is May 1.
