Another Supply Chain Shortage Caused by the Pandemic: Nurses

400,000 have left the profession in the last two years.

This shortage was not caused by the "offshoring" of the supply chain.

Listen to this The Daily Podcast: Somebody's Got to Save Us While We Are Saving Everyone Else'

My wife has had two hospitalizations in the last two years. One planned and one unplanned. In both cases we encountered traveling nursing staff which is discussed near the end of the podcast.

When I quizzed them about who and why, in both cases they mentioned the pay differential, which is explained above. In one instance it was a young woman who liked the adventure of living in different parts of the country. In the second case, it was a husband wife team, both nurses who traveled to different locations together.

I have not heard these people described as "Gig Workers" but, it would appear, that is what they are.

Like all supply chain issues there are interdependencies that impact the supply and demand. While one solution is to crank out more nurses via our nursing schools, there is a shortage of nursing instructors.

Perhaps we should "import" Chinese nurses?
