Computer Glitch at National Weather Service Delayed Tornado Warning

Warnings are potentially the first line of failure.

Warnings are "danger points" for emergency managers. Screw one up and it is a very visible failure. In this case, a warning did go out, it was just delayed, see Computer glitch delayed National Weather Service warnings before Winterset tornado

According to the article, the delayed warning did not mean that people did not get the warning in sufficient time. However, one of the tremendous strides that have been made in weather warnings is that more time is being given to allow people to get to safety.

While technology is our friend, it can also be an albatross when it fails. Alternate paths for communications are one way to avoid single points of failure.

And, the NWS was not the only warning issue. Scroll to the end of the story and you will see that one town had trouble with their sirens.
