In the current health coverage debate much has been said about how we have the best health system in the world. While that might be debated, this study The Next Challenge in Health Care Preparedness: Catastrophic Health Events highlights many challenges.

The study points out that we are vastly unprepared for truly large scale mass casualty events. When you look at local mass care plans they might start with patient numbers as low as 20-30. Imagine if you will the impact of tens of thousands of patients needing care in one single region.

Healthcare coalitions are highlighted as one solution along with regional action that goes beyond just neighboring hospitals working together.

Given the threats that we face in the future this is an area that can be vastly improved by just getting medical centers to work together. Public health organizations should lead the way in coordinating activities that benefit the larger regional community.
