Big IT Companies Working from Home Until 2021

Being in IT gives them that flexibility.

The last few months has shown that the majority of companies that focus on IT can have their staffs work from home and remain productive. Big ones like Google, Zillow and Facebook have already told their employees that they can work from home until the end of 2020. Amazon has told employees they will be social distancing until October — and that could change.

There will be plenty of impacts to small businesses that feed off of these companies. Amazon has 50,000 employees in Seattle, primarily concentrated in one campus like area of the city. They have 47 buildings in downtown Seattle. The restaurants, food trucks and other vendors who cater to these thousands of employees will have trouble surviving until their customers return.

For the longer term, building owners and operators, developers and construction companies are likely eyeing these changes warily. What will this mass migration of employees of large businesses to home mean for their own futures?
