Climate Change Refugees Coming from Central America

When you have nothing left ... what would you do?

What do you do when you have nothing but a few possessions because you lost your home in a hurricane or two? In Central America there are no similar Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) programs that provide assistance. Perhaps at best some nonprofits and the church provide food assistance. This, then, is one of the major issues prompting a surge in border crossings along the United States southern border.

See this CNN article: "Two big factors are making things worse at the border. But they're not getting much attention."

Vice President Harris has now been put in charge of looking for solutions and coordinating the response to the influx of immigrants coming into the United States through Mexico. There will be no easy solutions!

Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
