COVID-19 Causes Shortage of Blood Donors in Some Locations

You can say that blood is one of the commodities we all need.

There are many commodity shortages at present, mainly due to people running to the store to stock up on supplies. That topic, plus the issue of maintaining an adequate supply of blood is covered in this article, Blood Donor Shortage Amid Virus Causing Worries in Some Areas.

Emergency managers are one group of people who should understand more about the issue of blood supply. I have ranted in the past about how "just in time" manufacturing and the elimination of warehouses that has hollowed out our ability to weather a storm — like the one we are in. Blood is one life-saving commodity that cannot be stored for very long. The "just in time" supply and delivery system is how blood supply works every day, and especially today.

If you know little about blood supply and the critical nature of its collection and distribution, see this blog post DZTV: The Critical Nature and Process for Maintaining the Blood Supply from the past and especially the linked Disaster Zone TV show there. It is less than 30 minutes long and I promise you that what you learn you will be able to apply today and into the future when disaster strikes again.
