COVID-19: Shut It All Down Now!

Hit the reset button!

The coronavirus continues to percolate along through the United States. The latest warning coming from Dr. Birx of the White House Coronavirus Task Force is that the upper Midwest could be the next hot spot for infections.

The reopening of schools continues to be debated, Major League Baseball has some virus hot spots and on and on.

A few days ago, there was this, Medical Experts Tell Government: ‘Shut It Down Now, And Start Over’, which is a telling statement from people who should know better than anyone how to react to a pandemic. The problem we have had is that we tried to "have our cake and eat it too." Fighting the virus with one hand tied behind our back while trying to reopen too soon. That sin is being punished right now in the states that took that path.

Then there is California, which did a marvelous job of shutting down and reopening gradually, only to see the wheels come off the bus with a spike in infections, hospitalizations and deaths.

Nationally we are back up to recording over 1,000 deaths per day. We'll be at 150,000 deaths this week.

Like disaster warning systems I've written about in the past. The key factor is, "Do the people take the protective actions being recommended?" If they don't, you can't save them from a hurricane, tsunami or flood. The same is true for a pandemic. Heed the warning or suffer the consequences.

National leadership is what is needed. It is what separates us from the industrial nations of Europe.

Shut it down! Lock it down tight! Suffer the short-term pain so that we can all get back to living our lives in a post-COVID pandemic environment that at least has the possibility of some normalcy.
