Craig Weaver, USGS: An Impact Player

Craig Weaver was an impact player who retired in November.

It was about 20 years ago when I first met Craig Weaver. He was the senior United States Geological Survey (USGS) coordinator here in the Pacific Northwest. Today I found out that he retired in November. Yikes! I already miss him. He was my "go-to person" to get the skinny on any topic concerning earthquakes.

What I found so great about Craig was that he was approachable and interested in seeing science actually implemented at the state and local levels. His partnership was the type I have a hankering for. He'd give straight, non-technical answers. He didn't hide behind the science, but was as forthright as he could be. He saw the ability of science and emergency management to work together for the common good.

I learned today that he has not been permanently replaced -- yet. It was noted that over the years he played a pretty unique role here in the NW. You can't just take a cookie cutter and replace him.

Knowing Craig, I expect he is not living in the past and has started the next phase of his life. I'm sure my emergency management compatriots would join me in wishing him well in the future.
