I think humor is critical to a healthy workplace. You can have fun without making fun of other people and taboo subjects. It "lightens" the load during the day. Sometimes even gallows humor helps when things are really bad.
One of the rules I try to follow is to only make fun of myself. Even then--I remember--someone took offense at that. What the hey! Another rule I have is that if you have to close the door to tell me the joke, it is not appropriate in the workplace. So don't tell it! Bosses set the tone for what is proper so watch the example you set for others.
As for the LinkedIn discussion I liked the one that defines the difference between an emergency and a disaster. An emergency is having to go to the bathroom, a disaster is not making it.
