Job: Operations Section Chief for the FEMA Region I IMAT in Boston

This is an IMAT position, so travel is required.

Vernon Owens, the former incumbent for the position of Operations Section Chief for the FEMA Region I IMAT in Boston is taking a new position at FEMA headquarters, which opens up a slot on the Region I Incident Management Assistant Team (IMAT).

You get to see all the garden spots where presidentially declared disasters have occurred. What could be more fun?

Congrats to Vernon who started his emergency management career with the King County Office of Emergency Management. He was looking at perhaps becoming a Seattle firefighter, but I told him the variety of working in emergency management would be a better fit, long term.

He is one of two African-Americans who I was able to recruit into emergency management. The other, Ken Hudson, is still working (I think) for FEMA Region 8 in Colorado.

Who have been your diversity hires? We need to be better at making our ranks reflect our community's cultural make-up.

Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
