Quote: Opportunities Disguised as Problems

Problems are sometimes like puzzles. You need to get all the pieces or people on the board.

“We are all faced with a series of great opportunities—brilliantly disguised as insoluble problems.”  John Gardner  One of my suggestions to people looking for jobs is to find out what the problems are at the company or government agency that they are looking to work for.

What employers want are problem solvers; people who can dig deep and figure out the causes of the problem and then discern ways to start solving the issue of the day.  Personally I like the challenge of working on an issue that some people will say can’t be solved.  Not that I like tilting at windmills, but sometimes failure comes from a lack of effort and persistence.

As the quote above points out, these problems are wonderful opportunities to be creative in what it is that you do.  True there are some issues that are thorny and won’t go away with the flick of a wrist and a little dabbling here and there.  It may take time and the work of many different individuals, teams and disciplines to solve a problem.

It is typical of today’s issues that they are not simplistic.  Because of our interconnectedness we cannot sometimes solve one problem without causing another to pop-up some other place.  With this in mind it is important to learn to work with other people.  People who might not even like, but you need one another for a common cause.

Learning to work together might be the first problem and opportunity that you can solve.
