Exploring With NACo's AI County Compass — ICYMI

National Association of Counties Chief Information Officer Rita Reynolds discusses the organization's comprehensive toolkit for local governance and implementation of artificial intelligence.

The rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) presents unique opportunities and challenges for county governments. To address both the risks and the rewards of this technological evolution, the National Association of Counties (NACo) convened a committee to develop a knowledge base and resource hub to share best practices with counties that are considering, adopting and regulating the use of GenAI.

From the start, the committee identified numerous myths surrounding GenAI that may result in the public sector dismissing its importance or misunderstanding its usefulness. And even though some jurisdictions may think they can avoid the use of GenAI by forbidding employees from using the technology, the genie is already out of the bottle — with the technology being integrated into many common applications, more than 75 percent of NACo's survey audience reported using GenAI both at work and in their personal lives.

On this episode of Government Technology's "In Case You Missed It," NACo CIO Rita Reynolds provides an overview of the new AI toolkit, discussing benefits, challenges and opportunities recommendations for the technology and touching upon recommendations from their policy, ethics, applications and workforce working groups.

The groundwork that counties lay today will determine the roles that GenAI could play in future county operations for the benefit of workers, residents and society.
