Is everyone cheating at Wordle?

Answer: It sure looks that way.

WordFinder has a new study that suggests lots of people are cheating at Wordle. The word puzzle site, which helps provide answers to word-based games like Scrabble, recently released a report that found that Google searches for “today’s wordle” increased by 196 percent in the last month.

It all appears to link back to The New York Times’ acquisition of the popular online word-guessing game at the end of January. Before that, according to WordFinder’s line graph, daily searches for “today’s wordle” were slowly climbing at a steady pace, without any sharp ups or downs. After the acquisition, however, the line starts to resemble a mountain range, with jagged ups and downs as it climbs.

One possible explanation for this is that The New York Times has been making the game more difficult. Thus, more people are giving up and Googling the answer, especially on the most difficult days.
