On Thursday, Google released its annual Year in Search, and worldwide, the No. 1 term people searched for was “Wordle,” the game now owned by the New York Times that challenges players to guess a five-letter word in just six tries.

Globally, the top five searches were:
  1. Wordle
  2. India vs England
  3. Ukraine
  4. Queen Elizabeth
  5. Ind vs SA

In the U.S., Wordle still ruled, but the top five overall were slightly different:
  1. Wordle
  2. Election results
  3. Betty White
  4. Queen Elizabeth
  5. Bob Saget
The Year in Search is also further broken down by categories like News, People and Actors, and results for many individual countries are available to peruse.

This year is the first time Google has also produced a Local Year in Search, which allows users to find the most popular trends by ZIP code. For example, only three places had “country concerts” as a top “near me” search — Lincoln, Neb.; Tallahassee, Fla.; and Sacramento, Calif. — and people in Austin, Texas, searched for “voting near me” more than anywhere else in the country.
