"The Internet is increasingly part of our home and business lives, from banking and shopping, to communicating with family and friends," Coonan said.
National E-Security Awareness Week will raise awareness of the simple steps Internet users can take to protect themselves online. The week is a collaborative initiative between Australian Government, industry and community organizations. A steering committee comprising representatives from Australian Government and industry was established to guide the development of the week.
"We all need to think about security when we set up our computers and in our behavior when online. National E-Security Awareness Week has activities and useful information about online security, for businesses and home users of all ages." As part of the awareness week, Senator Coonan launched a new Stay Smart Online Web site with advice on Internet safety.
"I encourage all Australians to visit this Web site the next time they are online. The Web site provides access to a range of information and resources including helpful top tips, fun quizzes, and guides to help them stay smart online.
She also outlined three "common sense" steps when transacting online:
- "Protect your computer -- Install security software and keep it up to date
- Think before you click -- Don't open suspicious emails or attachments from unknown sources or emails requesting your personal details; and
- Stay informed -- Visit the Stay Smart Online Web site at to find more top tips and sign up to receive the latest advice on emerging issues and e-security threats."
