City of Bridgeport, Conn., Launches Smart Card Parking Meters

Bridgeport becomes second in region to offer coin-free parking solution

Mayor John M. Fabrizi announced the launch today of 100 downtown Bridgeport parking meters using the Parcxmart Card technology, which allows individuals to pay for parking and make purchases with participating merchants. Smart card compliant meters accept both the Parcxmart Card or coins for payment. Eventually, Bridgeport plans to replace all of its parking meters with smart card compliant meters that take either the card or coins instead of coin-only meters. Bridgeport is the second city in Connecticut to adopt the Parcxmart regional card solution.

"This is a practical example of ... using technology to improve the quality of life in Bridgeport," stated Fabrizi. "Together, the city and its local businesses can provide improved services while at the same time encouraging local economic development. The Parcxmart Card will make parking, commuting, and shopping easier for everyone who lives in, works in, or visits Bridgeport."

Parcxmart cards may be used to pay for parking meters and to make purchases under $100. Individuals may purchase the Card at participating stores, shops, restaurants, and other locations with cash, credit, or debit cards, and may be loaded with $10, $20, $40, $60, $80, and $100.

"The benefits of offering multi-functional smart cards to a parking system operator is the ability to scale the program over an entire region so the coin and cash eventually are removed from the system in a substantial manner," said John Regan, president and CEO, Parcxmart. "This in turn provides relief to parking operators, value to local merchants, and convenience to the parking public."
