The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) released a statement Friday explaining that an employee's laptop computer was stolen from a vehicle. The computer contained four databases that included personal information of licenses issued by the State Board of Well Drillers, State Board of Environmental Sanitarians, Waterworks Board and a database of Septic Inspectors. This data contained identifying information including names, addresses, phone numbers and social security numbers. The information contained in this computer was password protected, and the MDE believes it unlikely to be accessed for unauthorized purposes. "Nevertheless, the loss of this personal information is a significant breach of security and MDE sincerely apologizes for any impacts it may cause to the affected individuals," the MDE said in a statement.
Steps are being taken to protect the individuals whose information is contained on the stolen laptop. The Maryland Department of the Environment has sent out notification letters to all that may be affected and notified major credit bureaus of the incident. An investigation is underway to determine how this incident occurred, whether State policies were complied with, and to review procedures to ensure that this will not occur in the future.
