Maryland's Governor Meets with President on Cyber Security

Meeting of the National Infrastructure Advisory Council includes Gov. Ehrlich and Secretary Ridge

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. met with President George W. Bush and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge in a meeting of the National Infrastructure Advisory Council (NIAC). Governor Ehrlich is the only governor to sit on the council, which will make recommendations to the president regarding the security of the cyber and information systems of U.S. national security and economic critical infrastructures.

"In our meeting today at the White House, President Bush and Secretary Ridge made clear their commitment to protecting the nation's information systems from terrorist attack," Erlich said. "I am proud to participate on the national council that will help meet that goal. Our global economy and international security are increasingly reliant on global networks and the free flow of information. We cannot afford to leave those information systems vulnerable to threats of any kind."

NIAC supports a coordinated effort of government and the private sector to protect the nation's crucial infrastructure. Members of the NIAC represent major public and private sectors, including banking and finance, transportation, energy, manufacturing and emergency government services. The NIAC develops ways to encourage private industry to perform risk assessments of critical information systems and seeks ways to handle security vulnerability on the Internet.

The council also assesses the current state of information sharing within public and private sectors and makes specific recommendations for improvement and enhancement. President Bush established the NIAC in October 2001 and named Gov. Ehrlich to the council in February 2003.
