Michigan's Corporation Division Wins International Award for Credit Card Security

"The security of our customers' credit card information has been increased, and our employees have gained greater control over turnaround time"

The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) Bureau of Commercial Services, Corporation Division has won an international award for implementing a more secure credit card processing system to protect Michigan residents.

The International Association of Commercial Administrators (IACA) presented its Win-Win in Information Technology Award to the State of Michigan at IACA's annual conference May 14-18 in Nevada.

"The redesign of our fee collection program has indeed been a win-win for both Michigan residents and our staff," said Robert W. Swanson, acting DLEG director. "The security of our customers' credit card information has been increased, and our employees have gained greater control over turnaround time, resulting in a quicker response to each customer."

DLEG's Corporation Division provides services that facilitate the formation of corporations, limited partnerships, limited liability companies, and limited liability partnerships in Michigan.

When the Auditor General recently identified a need for greater database controls, Swanson said, DLEG contacted the Michigan Department of Treasury and Department of Information Technology (MDIT) to collaborate in modifying the Corporation Division's fee collection system.

"We were happy to lend our expertise to create a more secure and efficient system," said MDIT Director Teri Takai. "The result has been an increase in the safety of citizens' credit card information, something we are all very concerned with today."
