Navy Data Found on Unsecured Civilian Web Site

Federal agencies and military offices must take every caution to ensure the safety of sensitive personal information, says Tom Davis, Chairman, Committee on Government Reform

Tom Davis(R-VA), Chairman of the Committee on Government Reform comments on the U.S. Navy's discovery that an unsecured civilian web site contained personal information on as many as 28,000 sailors and family members:

"Once again, we face the prospect that sensitive information on active duty military personnel has possibly been compromised. It is a reminder that, in this modern age, federal agencies and military offices must take every caution to ensure the safety of sensitive personal information. And it is a reminder how important our ongoing cyber security efforts are."

"In this case, it appears the Navy took quick action to get the data removed from the Web site and soon will be contacting the affected individuals, and I applaud them for their response."

In addition, the Navy has posted information on how to watch for suspicious activity on personal accounts at its Navy Personnel Command Web site, www.npc.navy.mil, and sailors may call the NPC call center to see if their personal data was on the list. The number is 1-866 U ASK NPC (1-866-827-5672).
