Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser has appointed Michael Rupert to take the role of interim chief technology officer within the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO).

Rupert recently served as OCTO’s associate chief technology officer for customer experience. According to the announcement, his experience spans public and private sectors and is familiar with the agency’s work, having served as OCTO’s communications director from 2014 to 2022. His other experience includes multimedia content creation, digital communication strategy, marketing and event logistics.

The news follows personnel changes that started with the sudden resignation of former Deputy Mayor and Chief of Staff John Falcicchio amid sexual harassment allegations. Bowser responded to Falcicchio’s departure by naming former Chief Technology Officer Lindsey Parker to take over the chief of staff role last month. Parker had been with the administration since 2015.

“I have every confidence in my new Chief of Staff Lindsey Parker and our new interim Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Keith Anderson,” she said during a March 20 press conference. “And I have immense confidence in the 37,000 employees of D.C. government who will keep us moving forward.”

Rupert has previously told Government Technology about D.C.’s unique IT network and large municipal digital network.
