Motorola Solutions Announces Public Safety Threat Alliance

The newly formed alliance will serve as a resource to help public safety organizations in the U.S. with sharing, learning about and reacting to cyber threat intelligence from a number of partner entities.

A newly launched Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (ISAO) aims to help public safety organizations better share and respond to cyber threat intelligence.

Motorola Solutions, which provides communications products and other software and equipment to public safety clients, announced the new Public Safety Threat Alliance (PSTA) this week.

The ISAO intends to draw threat information from various sources and translate it into “actionable” intelligence for members. It aims to alert them to cyber risks and incidents and help them understand how to improve cybersecurity defenses and resilience strategies in response.

Motorola Solutions said in its announcements that threat intelligence sources will include the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Motorola Solutions’ Cybersecurity Services, other ISAOs, nonprofits focused on cyber threat sharing, PSTA members and other entities.

CISA Executive Assistant Director for Emergency Communications Billy Bob Brown Jr. said in a release statement that the PSTA “fills a critical void, creating a single entity entirely focused on the collection, analysis, production and sharing of actionable public safety-focused cyber threat information and intelligence.”

According to the ISAO Standards Organization, PSTA’s efforts this year will center on U.S.-based members, before looking to expand globally. The ISAO will be open to “public safety organizations in the U.S. and state, local, tribal, and territorial organizations, including operations centers and fusion centers, that provide cybersecurity capabilities in support of the public safety mission,” the organization said.

Scott Kaine, Motorola Solutions corporate vice president of cybersecurity, said the organization launches at a critical moment.

“With cyber threats increasing in scope, scale and complexity, the Public Safety Threat Alliance can help to dramatically increase the efficacy with which intelligence is used to monitor, detect and respond to potential threats before they result in downtime of public safety services,” Kaine said in a press release.
