The MOEA guides and manages Taiwanese economic development and facilitates technology creation and adoption. It also works to attract telecommunication and information technology companies to partner with Taiwanese businesses to promote innovative technologies.
The Taiwanese government has allocated significant resources to build the WiMAX ecosystem. Through its M-Taiwan Initiative, Taiwan will deploy broadband wireless infrastructure and life-style applications based on WiMAX technology. The government allocated $300 million for WiMAX-related investment under the M-Taiwan project, which runs though 2008.
"Taiwan is looking to take a market leadership role in WiMAX technology development and deployment," said Steve Ruey-Long Chen, minister of MOEA. "As we look to promote and facilitate WiMAX in Taiwan, having industry leaders as partners will be essential. Working with Starent Networks is a logical choice, as they are seen as one of the world's leading Mobile WiMAX technology providers."
Starent Networks is an industry leader in mobile multimedia networking and provides key elements for Mobile WiMAX networks, the Access Services Network Gateway (ASN-GW) and Home Agent. The MoU between MOEA and Starent Networks outlines several key goals, including: MOEA facilitation of strategic alliances between Starent Networks and Taiwanese WiMAX vendors; cooperation in developing a global WiMAX ecosystem; joint promotion of WiMAX technology through the M-Taiwan initiative; and facilitation of joint testing among vendors.
"We are very pleased to be working with the MOEA on WiMAX development and promotion, as Taiwan has long been a technology innovator and early adopter," said Ashraf Dahod, president and CEO of Starent Networks. "Having the Taiwanese government and major vendors work together to build the WiMAX market will help to propel global availability of wireless broadband."
