(TNS) — A new cybersecurity governance certificate program is being launched by Concordia and Dominican universities in River Forest.

The program, expected to be available this fall, is designed to prepare students for managing rapid advancements in the burgeoning information technology field. The four-course certificate program will be delivered fully online and will be taught by instructors from both universities.

Courses will be scheduled so students can complete the certification in two semesters, officials said.

"Cybersecurity is a complex problem," said Dominican professor Stacy Kowalczyk. "It is not just a technology issue, but also a social issue that involves legal and regulatory requirements, human behavior and organizational management. This certificate is unique in that it addresses both the technical and social issues that surround cybersecurity. Organizations need people who can synthesize the technology and the social aspects of cybersecurity in jobs such as cybersecurity governance managers, risk and compliance management, information strategy development, data security, data governance, threat assessment and auditors."

The certificate is offered as an added credential for post-baccalaureate or post-master's degree students, as well as for students currently pursuing master's degrees in library and information science, information management and business.

Courses in the certificate program will be offered in eight-week segments and cover topics such as cybersecurity threats and proactive counter attacks, risk management and the legal, social and policy issues surrounding information privacy.

"We are excited to partner with Dominican on this certificate program that is relevant and beneficial to students as they enter today's workforce," said Dean of Concordia's College of Business Claudia Santin. "Preparing more students to solve cybersecurity challenges is increasingly crucial in a world where people want protection from identity theft and cyberattacks."
