Disaster Zone Podcast: ‘The Future of the CDC’

They recognize that they need to change with the times.

One of the dynamics that played out during the COVID-19 pandemic was how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) responded to the pandemic and then at times was sidelined from being the lead federal agency — for various reasons.

One of the things that the CDC has said recently is that they are doing a “self-examination” on how they need to evolve for better performance in the future.

In this Disaster Zone podcast, “The Future of the CDC,” we have a discussion with a systems expert who looks at how they performed, the good things that happened because of their work, and then improvements that are needed in the future.

Here’s the description of the podcast:

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has started an internal and external process to examine how the agency performed in response to the COVID Pandemic. In this podcast the guest is Julie Swann, who is the department head and A. Doug Allison Distinguished Professor of the Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Professor Swann has conducted research, outreach and education to improve how health and humanitarian systems operate worldwide. Together we examine the many challenges that the pandemic created for the CDC and look at how they and state and local public health systems can move forward to improve their future pandemic response.”
