Fear Drives Many to Not Innovate

Innovation means doing something new.

If you are going to do try doing something new and different, it also means that you are exposing yourself to failure. What got me thinking about this is this Government Technology magazine article, Why Didn’t Government Invent Uber?  Uber of course is a ridesharing app that like others is revolutionizing the taxi industry.

It is a culture issue as discussed in the linked article above, but it is not so much the developers or early adopters, but management that does not want to take risks. They fear that the money spent will not have a payout in the end. They fear that by adopting some new technology or social media, they will be open to criticism. More importantly, they don't trust that systems will work the way that they are designed to work -- and that misinformation would cause their actions to be called into question.

Generally, government, and I'd add the military, are not breeding a generation of risk-takers. If leaders are not demanding change, they will get more of the same. It is the leaders who have to step up and say it is OK to fail. I'll cover your back! Experiment and take risks since it is the only way we will get better.
