Media Consolidation, Good or Bad?

Business consolidation is very big right now. Is it good for the media consumer?

In looking at this story, With $3.9B offer, media giant hopes to buy Tribune Media and own a second Seattle TV station,is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Business consolidation appears to be the name of the game these days. Go big, so you can compete better — seems to be the concept. We've seen it happen across many different industries. One big merger that is pending and keeping people in suspense is who will buy T-Mobile? If we go down to three major carriers, will that be bad? If it is bad, who is it bad for — the consumer maybe?

Back to the issue of media consolidation, personally, I don't like it. This is true especially with print journalism and about the only place where you "might" get thoughtful editorials on a variety of topics — plus, straight-forward reporting based on facts, real facts.

With fewer independent media outlets, what does it mean for emergency managers wanting to forge working relationships with individual stations?
