Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) officials are trying to determine the nature of an object that brought one of the world’s largest drills to a halt.
According to the Seattle Times, Bertha, the Highway 99 drilling machine, had tunneled an eighth of the route from downtown Seattle to South Lake Union when the machine ground to a halt after running into an object of unknown origin.
“We don’t know what it is,” said KaDeena Yerkan, a spokeswoman for WSDOT told Seattle Times reporter Mike Lindlom. “We don’t know whether it is man-made or natural.”
