Federal Funds to Power 8 EV Charging Stations Around Michigan

Two sites in Macomb County and a half-dozen in surrounding areas will get electric vehicle charging stations. The state can now begin spending remaining federal EV infrastructure funds.

Electric Vehicle
(TNS) — Macomb County will receive two sets of electric-vehicle charging stations among 83 awarded by the Michigan Department of Transportation through a nationwide federal program, according to MDOT officials.

State officials have learned the MDOT can begin spending the remaining $51 million of $106 million it has received under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program under the Federal Highway Administration, MDOT reported in a press release Monday.

MDOT officials called the federal approval development “a significant milestone in Michigan’s journey toward a cleaner transportation future.

“This funding will help strategically expand fast charging infrastructure, close critical gaps in Michigan’s EV charging network, support economic development and ensure that Michigan remains a leader in mobility innovation,” the release said.

The two sites chosen for EV portals in Macomb are located at:

  • 46963 Gratiot Ave., at 21 Mile Road, Exxon gas station, Chesterfield Township, to be completed by Safeiedine Oil Co., and
  • 25700 Dequindre Road, south of 11 Mile/ Interstate 696, Bird Bird restaurant, Warren, to be completed by Red E Charging LLC, officials said.
Both locations will have four stations.

A half-dozen sites also have been approved in surrounding areas such as Grosse Pointe, Troy, St. Clair County and Midtown Detroit. Those EV stations will be located at:

  • 21110 Mack Ave. south of Vernier Road at Beyond Juicery + Eatery, Grosse Pointe Woods, four ports by Red E Charging;
  • 14 Mile and John R roads, Oakland Mall, Troy, 10 stations by Tesla Inc.
  • 1336 Wadhams Road, St. Clair, four ports by Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc.
  • 2424 Wadhams, Kimball Township, four stations by Pilot Travel Centers;
  • 3191 Capac Road, Capac, four ports by Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores;
  • 714 E. Warren Ave., at the Interstate 75 (Chrysler) freeway, Detroit, four stations by Red E Charging.

MDOT is coordinating with the federal agency and “engaging with local governments, tribal nations, utilities, industry partners and other stakeholders to align program implementation with statewide priorities,” officials said.

Under receipt of the $51 million, officials said the MDOT is preparing for a third round of applications with the intention of providing Michigan communities the opportunity to access the funds to support the program’s goals of closing geographic gaps, supporting medium-duty vehicles and fleets, improving charger reliability and user experience, promoting equitable access, and aligning charging investments with economic development, tourism and long-term grid considerations.
