What popular item is Google helping deliver via drone?

Answer: Girl Scout Cookies.

The pandemic has made it difficult for Girl Scouts to safely sell and deliver their well-known cookies in the way that they normally do, with overall sales down about 50 percent from previous years. Fortunately, technology has a solution.

The residents of Christiansburg, Va., will have the option to get their Girl Scout Cookies delivered by drone this year, thanks to a new partnership between Girl Scouts and Google subsidiary Wing. Through the end of May, members of the local Girl Scout troops will package up cookie orders and send them on their way with Wing’s delivery drones.

The partnership is a great way to get cookies delivered while maintaining social distancing, as well as giving young girls the chance to use and become familiar with an emerging technology. “Girl Scouts has set a goal of getting 2.5 million girls into the STEM pipeline by 2025,” said Lia Reich, Wing’s global communications lead. “We hope this partnership contributes to those efforts, by allowing local girls to experience drone-delivery technology and get a glimpse into various STEM-based career paths.”
