Topeka, Kan., Searching for Next CIO

The state's capital city is looking for a new chief information officer to lead an information technology department of about two dozen now that its previous CIO, Randi Stahl, is no longer with the city.

Topeka, Kan., is looking for the city's next technology leader following the recent departure of Chief Information Officer Randi Stahl.

Topeka has posted an ad for a new CIO online, and the city has also adjusted its organizational chart to show that Pattie Biggs is serving as interim director of IT, in addition to being Topeka's deputy director of infrastructure and data management.

Stahl held the top spot in the city’s information technology department dating back to February 2023, and her recent departure was first reported by The Topeka Capital-Journal. The city had not responded to an emailed confirmation request at the time of publication.

Topeka is seeking a degreed professional who has experience with project management and enterprise resource management systems. The position posting doesn’t list a close date, but it lists an annual salary of up to $156,134.

The IT shop provides services to all city departments and has three divisions: business systems, computing and telecommunications.

The business systems division provides back-end support, application implementation, data analytics and web development; computing provides data networking services, computer systems and help desk support, server and network storage systems, and information security; while the telecommunications program includes a fiber-optic system, structured cabling services and telephone systems.

IT has 25 full-time employees, according to the FY2025 city budget, and it serves about 1,180 city employees. Topeka has about 125,000 residents, according to the U.S. census.
