(TNS) — Michael Hamel has been hired as the city's chief information officer by City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr.

Hamel replaces Eileen Cazaropoul, who retired in May after a 34-year career.

Hamel, who will start Jan. 10, joins the city with 14 years of experience in computer information technology, according to a press release from the city.

Hamel will oversee a $5.7 million operating budget, as well as 34 employees. In addition, he will support more than 650 city employees and assist all city departments with IT functions including cybersecurity.

Hamel will also oversee the city's Cybersecurity Awareness Program, providing cybersecurity awareness and training to employees, and will lead a team of programmers in maintaining the city's financial operations.

"I am thrilled to welcome Michael to the city family," Augustus said in the release. "Technology and cybersecurity are integral to municipal operations and while Worcester has been a leader in network safety and solutions, I look forward to working with Michael as he develops new strategies and further prepares the city for the future of technology."

Hamel comes to Worcester after working as Boston's chief of enterprise applications where he supervised more than 65 staff members and rebuilt the city's Geographic Information System.

Hamel also has served as the state's deputy chief engagement officer, where he oversaw the Office of Municipal and School Technology and the Bureau of Geographic Information.

He also led the Municipal Cyber Resiliency Working Group and developed strategies and grant programs in support of safe and efficient technology practices.
