The higher ed technology services company Apogee has acquired Cumulus Technology Services Inc., intending to build out its portfolio of cloud services to serve customers shifting away from on-prem data storage, a recent announcement said.

According to a news release, the merger could help the company meet demand for cloud services in higher education, potentially improving operational efficiency and reducing workloads for limited higher ed IT staff struggling to secure and manage growing networks for digital learning.

“Apogee’s commitment to empowering colleges and universities to do and achieve more is the driving force behind the acquisition of Cumulus Technology Services,” Apogee Chief Executive Officer Scott Drossos said in a public statement. “We have the services, talent and scale to be a catalyst for change and guide higher education customers on their digital transformation journey. I look forward to extending the Apogee managed-services portfolio into the cloud and hybrid cloud to enhance the security and performance of higher ed applications, data and infrastructure.”

Apogee hired Drossos, formerly chief operating officer of the IT service provider InterVision, in September 2021.

The news release about the merger said it will integrate new services into Apogee’s tech product portfolio in the coming months, including ERP cloud migration, disaster recovery as a service and infrastructure as a service.

“Cumulus Technology Services offers a broad range of consulting services that are tailored to higher education customers,” said Candace Jones, VP of business and administrative services at Pasadena Area Community College District, in a public statement. “Their wealth of experience supporting institutions of all sizes coupled with their strong [Amazon Web Services] expertise and knowledge allows institutions to quickly realize their technology goals.”

According to the announcement, specific terms of the merger remain confidential as of this week, with integration of services currently underway.
