California Boosts Mobile Power of Student Dashboard

The one-year-old dashboard helps students plan their path to college while also offering a treasure-trove of educational and career data. The state also has increased the tool’s accessibility.

The pathway to college education has become more mobile in California.

The state says it has “refreshed” its Student Pathways Dashboard, in part by adding what a statement called “fully mobile capabilities.”

The dashboard, which launched a year ago, offers data about education and career outcomes, job trends and other metrics that can help users explore educational options.

The data include such information as institutions’ racial makeup of first-year students, types of degrees earned by students and how long it takes to graduate.

Upgrades include making the dashboard fully accessible via mobile devices, faster load times and performance, and “improved accessibility” for students with vision impairments, according to the statement.

The dashboard now also includes an extra year of data.

“Now more than ever, people need access to trusted information to help them make decisions about their education and careers,” said Mary Ann Bates, executive director at the California Office of Cradle-to-Career Data, in the statement. “Prior to launching Student Pathways, we listened first, then built it. After launching, we continued to listen and make improvements.”

Since the debut of the dashboard, users have visited it about 80,000 times, according to the statement.

The upgrades reflect a larger trend in government technology, one helping to drive business in the industry: the increasing popularity of online dashboards for a variety of civic tasks.

For instance, a fast-growing but relatively small city in the Dallas-Fort Worth area recently started using a dashboard to help manage capital planning.
