A supply chain management specialization program has been added to the College of Business at Misericordia University and it's one way local colleges and universities are adapting to the ever-changing world of business.
Pierson said business students specializing in supply chain management will be prepared to address issues relating to scarce resources, e-commerce demands and intervening market impacting events such as COVID, military crisis and major weather-related events.
"They will be prepared to meet the fast-growing and constantly changing demand impacting the supply chain by learning the latest practice in innovative, efficient operations and technologies," Pierson said. "Misericordia business students specializing in the high demand area of supply chain management will have an outstanding career and rewarding financial opportunities."
According to Misericordia University, supply chain management has exploded in today's world with new data showing there are six job openings per graduate. These jobs include logistics, procurement and operations as well as production managers.
The supply chain specialization program is being offered by Misericordia in partnership with LCM Consortium. The program is updated with real-world assignments every semester to reflect the constantly changing world of supply chain management. By having real-world experience, students can apply what they learn in the classroom to real job experience before graduating.
"The College of Business at Misericordia University continues to add new programs and specialization offerings to serve the ever-growing needs of the fast-evolving world in which we live," said Jim Roberts, chief of staff at Misericordia University.
COMBATING CYBER CRIME
As cyber threats continue to grow, the University of Scranton stays current to combat cyber crimes that threaten businesses and individuals by offering students the skills and training needed to understand and investigate cybersecurity incidents and threats.
The university recently partnered with international defense and security company Jacobs to prepare students and professionals for careers in cyber intelligence, law enforcement and cybersecurity.
Through the partnership initiated by U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, Jacobs will offer advice to keep the university's cyber-related undergraduate and graduate curriculum current.
Jacobs will also be a source of internships for university students and a source of job placement for university graduates. Additionally, Jacobs is engaging and supporting the university's summer Cyber Investigation Camp for local high school students.
Dr. Sinchul Back, assistant professor and director of cyber crime and cybersecurity for Scranton's department of sociology, criminal justice and criminology, said collaboration between "academia and industry is key to addressing the pressing global challenges — cyber threats and cyber defense — that face our society."
In the fall, the University of Scranton will offer a new master's degree in cyber crime investigation and cybersecurity, university spokesman Stan Zygmunt said.
LCCC OFFERS TRAINING FOR JOBS IN HIGH DEMAND
Luzerne County Community College is offering a two-year program where students can earn an associate's degree in medical assisting, another position in high demand.
Amid shortages of physicians and nurses, Spry said medical assistants have taken on a larger role.
Students learn the basic knowledge of the medical office and procedures that may be utilized in the physician's office. The skills acquired include scheduling patients, preparing patient records, managing financial matters, handling insurance arrangements, processing correspondence and managing an office. Skills also include measuring vital signs, phlebotomy, electrocardiography, pulmonary function testing and laboratory procedures.
Students are trained to assist doctors and patients administratively and medically in physician's offices, clinics, and hospitals, laboratories or other health service areas.
