A new integration between the education software company Instructure and education data company K16 Solutions could mean more streamlined data archiving and security for users of Instructure’s learning management system, Canvas.

According to a recent news release, a new data archiving tool from K16 Solutions, now available to Canvas users, allows administrators and IT staff to automate the data migration and integration process for sensitive institutional and course-level data while keeping the archives accessible. The companies said this could potentially save time for administrators and IT staff who can get overwhelmed with organizing and safeguarding increasingly large amounts of institutional data.

The announcement added that the new archiving technology can help administrators maintain compliance with specific data-governance policy guidelines across institutions and states, and makes it easier for users to restore archived data and readable content to Canvas.

“It’s essential to protect student data, but the complex and time-consuming process has made the job more difficult than it should be for administrators,” Liz Crawford, vice president of partnerships at Instructure, said in a public statement. “This partnership with K16 Solutions creates a powerful, yet simple solution to a common problem for educational institutions worldwide.”

Sam Kelly, LMS and senior systems administrator at Seminole State College of Florida, which piloted the program, said the solution proved useful to the college, where administrators had been looking for a more efficient means of backing up and securing course data.

“With Canvas Archiving powered by K16 Solutions, we can secure our student data, stay compliant, and remain in good standing for accreditation purposes,” Kelly said in a public statement.
