(TNS) — A Lafayette College student has sued the Easton school in federal court, saying she deserves a pro-rated refund for the half-semester of classes she was forced to take remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The lawsuit filed Oct. 17 by Julia Jin-Wolfson says she missed out on use of the facilities and student activities during the global pandemic.

“Students were deprived of the opportunity for hands-on, experiential, and collaborative learning and in-person dialogue, feedback, and critique, for which they were promised and pre-paid for,” according to the lawsuit.

Emails to the college’s public relations staff were not returned. An attorney hasn’t entered an appearance for Lafayette College yet. The college has until Nov. 9 to respond to the lawsuit, court records show.

The pandemic shut down schools and workplaces worldwide to curb the spread of the contagious respiratory disease. Most schools offered classes online as an alternative to a complete shutdown.

Jin-Wolfson’s lawsuit says she received a pro-rated refund for her dining plan and housing but was not offered an opportunity for a tuition refund. The campus shut down in March 2023 and the remainder of spring semester classes were hosted online only.

The lawsuit states she paid $27,256 for her spring semester classes plus a $240 activity and technology fee.

The lawsuit was filed by Pittsburgh attorney Gary F. Lynch. He wants U.S. District Judge John M. Gallagher to make his lawsuit a class action suit.
